Start with the boat, not the engine
The most common ordering mistake is picking a horsepower first and working backwards. What the boat is rated for, and what you actually put in it, decide the engine. Find yourself below.
Tender or dinghy
Weight decides it
You will be lifting this one on and off, so weight is what you will actually notice. Shaft length and tiller layout come next. Stay inside the builder’s horsepower rating.
Small fishing boat
Load decides it
Count people, gear, fuel and batteries before you count horsepower. Then check the hull rating and measure the transom.
Utility or workboat
The rating decides it
You are at the top of the portable range here. Check the rating and the working load first, then choose between manual and electric start.
Kicker or quiet running
How you run decides it
A kicker on a sailboat, or a tender you would rather run quietly. The Avator 7.5e suits both, and shaft length still has to match.
Before you order
Four things to check
These are the four that cause returns and disappointment. None of them takes more than a few minutes.
- The horsepower rating Use the boat builder’s rating as your ceiling, not as a target. Never size an engine from boat length.
- Transom height Measure it, then match it to shaft length. This is the one that costs the most to undo once an engine has shipped.
- Start and controls Manual or electric start, tiller or remote. Both are model-specific, so check the exact configuration you are ordering.
- Your normal load People, fuel, batteries and gear. Do not size the engine for an empty boat on a calm day.

Gas or electric

Both suit small boats, and they are not really competing. The question is how you use the boat and where you keep it.

About ordering and offers
What should I measure before I order?
Transom height first, because shaft length has to match it. Then find the boat builder’s horsepower rating, usually on a plate near the helm or the transom. Those two settle most of the decision.
How quickly will my order ship?
Order before noon Pacific time on a business day and it usually leaves the same day. Later orders usually go the next business day. Transit after that depends on the carrier and your province.
What arrives in the box?
The complete outboard, ready to rig, with its Mercury documentation and a 1-litre bottle of genuine Mercury engine oil ($40 Value). Smaller portables come boxed, the larger engines come crated.
Is the warranty the same for commercial use?
No. Commercial and government units carry their own warranty terms, and they don’t receive promotional benefits when a factory program is running.
Which outboard fits my boat?
Shaft length has to match your transom height, and horsepower has to suit the hull. The Outboard Finder narrows it down, or call 1-807-206-0032 with your transom measurement and we will confirm it.
