Four signs your portable is done
A portable outboard rarely fails all at once. It gets harder to live with, one season at a time.
Starting is a workout
Six pulls on a cold morning, or a choke routine only you understand. Modern EFI models start on the first or second pull, cold, without priming.
Parts are getting scarce
Once a carburettor kit or an impeller takes weeks to source, every small repair becomes a decision about the whole engine.
You’re mixing oil
Two-stroke premix means fuel calculations, smoke, and a motor most marinas would rather you ran quietly. FourStroke removes all three.
Repairs are stacking up
Two or three bills in a season on an engine past its warranty is usually the point where a new one costs less over the next five years.

Prefer no fuel at all? The Avator 7.5e delivers thrust comparable to a 3.5hp FourStroke with more torque at low speed, and there’s no oil, no fogging and no pull start.
What shaft length do I need?
This is the one that costs people money on a repower. Don’t assume the old motor was right, because plenty aren’t, and a wrong shaft is the most common reason a repower gets returned.
Measure your transom from the top centre, where the motor clamps on, straight down to the bottom of the hull.

Measure where the outboard will mount, not at the corner of the hull. If your boat has a notched transom, measure the notch. Between two sizes? Call 1-807-206-0032 before you order.
Two more things to check
Your capacity plate. It sets the maximum horsepower and weight for your hull. Most people are better served by the smallest engine that does the job than the largest the plate allows, because weight on the transom changes how a small boat sits and handles.
Tiller or remote. If your boat is rigged for remote steering and controls, the new engine has to match. The model code tells you: H for tiller handle, RC for remote. M is manual start, E is electric.
So a 15MLH is 15hp, manual start, long shaft, tiller handle.

Liftgate delivery is included at no extra charge, so the crate comes down to ground level without a dock or a forklift. A signature is required, and there’s a two-minute inspection worth doing before you sign.

We register the warranty
We email you a digital warranty card after your order ships. Send it back and we file it with Mercury Marine on your behalf. Coverage is valid at any authorized Mercury service centre in Canada.

About repowering
Will a new Mercury bolt onto my existing transom?
Almost always, provided the shaft length is right. Portable outboards clamp to a standard transom, so the fit question is shaft length rather than mounting pattern. Measure before you order, and call us if you’re between sizes.
Can I keep my old propeller?
Usually not. Prop shaft splines, pitch and diameter vary between engines and generations. Every new Mercury portable ships with a propeller matched to it.
What about my old controls and cables?
Tiller-handle engines need nothing. If your boat is rigged for remote steering, control compatibility depends on the engine and the existing rigging. Call 1-807-206-0032 before you order.
Do I need a bigger battery for electric start?
Electric-start models need a battery, and the manual specifies the minimum cranking amps. Manual-start models need none, which is one reason they stay popular on tenders.
What do I do with the old motor?
That one is yours to solve. Many marinas and scrap dealers take old outboards, and a running two-stroke often has resale value even when it’s no longer the engine you want.
