Privacy Policy

Privacy policies can be a dry read, so we’ll keep this straightforward.

We only collect what we need: getting your engine to your door, supporting you afterwards, and keeping the website running.

We’ll never sell your personal data.

The short version: we collect your name, contact details and address to ship your engine and register your warranty. Payment details are processed securely and never stored. Your data is never sold, and never used to train AI. You can ask to see it, correct it or delete it at any time.

Two laws govern this: PIPEDA, the federal privacy act, and PIPA, the British Columbia one. This policy follows both.

Who we’re

Mercury Outboards is a fully online store selling Mercury outboard engines. We ship across Canada from our base in Langley, BC.

Because we’re online with no store, all your data with us is digital. There’s no offline tracking, no in-store wifi monitoring and no point-of-sale data collection.

As a Mercury-Authorized Dealer, we sell the engines. Mercury Marine builds them.

What information do we collect?

Information you give us directly:

Why What we collect
To process orders and support you Name, email, phone number, shipping and billing addresses
To handle payments Payment details, processed securely and never stored by us
To stay in touch Emails, chat messages and support tickets you send us

Information we collect automatically, through cookies and tracking tools when you browse:

  • Your IP address, browser type and device
  • How you navigate the site, including which pages you visit and how long you stay

What we do not collect: we do not knowingly collect information from minors, and we do not collect sensitive personal data such as health information, religious beliefs or political opinions.

How do we use your information?

  • Process your payment and ship your outboard
  • Register your warranty with Mercury Marine
  • Send order confirmations and tracking updates
  • Answer your questions and provide technical support
  • Keep the website secure and protect against fraud
  • Send promotional emails, but only if you opt in, and you can unsubscribe any time

Do we use AI or profiling?

We believe in keeping things human.

Your personal information is never used to train AI models or to build automated profiles of your behaviour.

Tools on our site, such as the Outboard Finder, are simple rule-based guides that help you find the right motor.

How do we use cookies and tracking pixels?

Like most websites, we use cookies to make the site work and to understand our traffic.

Type What it does
Essential Needed for the site to work, such as keeping items in your cart. These cannot be turned off
Performance and analytics Show us how the site is performing. The data is anonymous and grouped
Marketing pixels Let us show relevant ads through platforms such as Google and Meta

Our promise on marketing pixels: they stay off and collect nothing until you accept on our cookie banner.

Who do we share your information with?

Only the trusted partners who help us run the business:

  • Our website platform. The store is built and hosted by Turnkey Web Solutions. Your customer and order data is securely processed and stored on their servers.
  • Service providers. Secure payment processors, shipping carriers and email providers receive what they need to do their part.
  • The manufacturer. We share your purchase details with Mercury Marine to activate and manage your warranty.
  • The law. If legally required, such as a court order, we disclose information to comply with the law or protect our customers.

Where does your data live?

Some of our partners handle data outside Canada. Payment, analytics and advertising partners such as Google and Meta operate in the United States.

Data held outside Canada falls under that country’s laws. Foreign authorities may be able to access it there.

We remain responsible for your data and require our partners to protect it to the same standard.

What are your rights, and how do you use them?

It’s your data. Tell us if you want to:

  • See a copy of the personal information we hold about you
  • Correct any mistakes in it
  • Withdraw your consent for marketing emails
  • Ask us to delete your data, subject to legal and tax record-keeping rules
  • Get a copy of your data in a portable electronic format

Email our Privacy Officer using the details below. We’ll ask you to verify who you’re first, usually by emailing from your account address and quoting a recent order number.

We respond within 30 days.

Think we’ve mishandled your data? Raise it with our Privacy Officer first. Still not happy? You can complain to the federal Privacy Commissioner, or to the BC one.

How do we keep your data safe?

  • All data on the site uses SSL/TLS encryption
  • We never store your full credit card number
  • We strictly limit which team members can access your personal details

How long do we keep it?

Nothing is kept longer than it needs to be:

What How long
Order records 7 years, for tax and accounting law
Warranty information The length of your warranty, plus 2 years
Support messages 3 years from our last conversation
Website analytics 26 months, anonymised

When we no longer need it, we safely delete or anonymise your information.

Updates to this policy

If we change how we handle privacy, or the law changes, we update this page. If we make major changes, we’ll email you.
