Warranty coverage

Your Mercury warranty, in plain terms.

Buy a motor from us and you get the full factory warranty from Mercury Marine. Here’s what is covered, what is not, and what to do if something goes wrong.

The short version: every Mercury outboard carries a 3-year factory warranty for pleasure use. Corrosion is covered separately, also for 3 years. We handle the registration. Repairs go through any authorized Mercury service centre in Canada, not back to us.

Standard 3 years
Corrosion 3 years
Commercial 1 year
SeaPro 2 years
Extended Up to 8 years
The fast facts

How long am I covered?

Coverage Term
Standard limited factory warranty, pleasure use 3 years
Limited corrosion warranty, pleasure use 3 years
Commercial use, standard models 1 year
Commercial use, SeaPro models 2 years
Mercury Product Protection, optional Up to 8 years total

We handle the registration

We email you a digital warranty card after your order ships. Send it back and we register the motor with Mercury on your behalf. On the Avator, the outboard and the battery register separately, so fill in both lines.

Local support, wherever you’re

Since we ship to your door, any authorized Mercury service centre handles repairs. Coverage is valid for motors registered and used in Canada and the United States.

Covered

What does the warranty cover?

If a part fails from a defect in materials or workmanship, Mercury repairs it, replaces it, or refunds it.

  • Pleasure use. The standard 3-year limited warranty covers regular personal use.
  • Commercial use. Commercial and government motors carry different terms. Check your manual or call us.
  • Corrosion. A separate 3-year warranty covers corrosion that stops the motor running. Basic care is expected: replace the anodes and flush with fresh water.
  • Avator electric. Covered by the standard 3-year limited warranty. A 5-year promotional term runs through August 31, 2026, after which it reverts to 3 years.
Not covered

What’s not covered?

Mercury expects the motor to be looked after, and coverage can be denied if it’s not.

Maintenance and wear

Spark plugs, filters, fluids and jet pump impellers wear out and are on you. Paint faded by sun is not covered.

Changes and accidents

Altering parts, splicing the wiring or fitting outside parts voids coverage. So does swamping the engine. So does water in the fuel or air intake, running it out of water, or hitting something submerged.

Extra logistics

The warranty covers the motor, not towing, haul-out, storage or your lost time.

Permanently voided

Racing or competition use, even by a previous owner. A repossessed motor, false registration, or one bought at auction, salvage or from an insurance claim.

Extended coverage

Can I extend my coverage?

Yes. Mercury Product Protection is a factory-backed plan, run by Mercury. Add it to your factory warranty and total cover reaches 8 years. The coverage does not lose value as the contract runs down.

To qualify, buy MPP before your factory warranty ends. The engine must be for pleasure use with fewer than 500 hours. You must live in Canada or the United States. A deductible applies per claim, and you can cancel in the first 30 days.

Making a claim

How do I submit a claim?

We ship to your door, so there’s no shop of ours to pull up to. Thousands of Mercury service centres can help. You’re never on your own.

  1. Call us first

1-807-206-0032. We pull your invoice and point you to the nearest centre.

  2. Bring your paperwork

Your invoice from us and your Mercury registration email.

  3. Let them work

The centre inspects the motor and files the claim with Mercury directly.

Do not ship motors or parts back to us

Once your motor has been fuelled, run or registered it cannot come back to us. Any defect after that point goes through the local warranty steps above. Please do not ship anything to our address unless we ask you to in writing. For return detail, see the Returns Policy page.

Selling the boat

Can I transfer the coverage?

An active warranty is a strong selling point, so it’s worth doing properly.

Standard warranty

Coverage passes to the next owner once the motor is re-registered, provided they use it for pleasure.

Mercury Product Protection

Transfer your MPP contract within 30 business days of the sale, or it’s voided. That window is easy to miss.

Keep your paperwork. Keep a digital folder with your invoice, your delivery-day photos and your service receipts. That covers almost every question that comes up later. You can pull past invoices any time from your account. Replacing an older engine rather than servicing this one? See Mercury repower.

Common questions

About warranty coverage

Do I have to register the warranty myself?

No, we do it for you. After your order ships we email you a digital warranty card. Complete it, send it back, and we file it with Mercury Marine. On the Avator, fill in both lines: the outboard and the battery register separately.

Where do I take it for warranty work?

Any authorized Mercury service centre in Canada. Call 1-807-206-0032 first and we’ll pull your invoice and point you to the nearest one. Do not ship the motor back to us.

What is the difference between the standard and corrosion warranties?

Two separate 3-year terms for pleasure use. The standard warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. The corrosion warranty covers corrosion that stops the motor running, provided you keep up basic care such as replacing anodes and flushing with fresh water.

Does the warranty cover routine maintenance?

No. Spark plugs, filters, fluids and impellers are wear items and they are on you. Sun-faded paint is not covered either. The warranty covers failures, not upkeep.

What voids my coverage?

Altering parts, splicing the wiring or fitting outside parts. So does swamping the engine, water in the fuel or air intake, running it out of water, or hitting something submerged. Racing or competition use voids it permanently, even if a previous owner did it.

I bought commercially. Do I get the same terms?

No. Commercial use carries 1 year on standard models and 2 years on SeaPro, and commercial and government units do not receive promotional benefits. Check your manual or call us.

Can I extend the coverage later?

Yes, as long as you buy Mercury Product Protection before your factory warranty ends. The engine must be pleasure use with fewer than 500 hours. Call Mercury Product Protection on 1-888-427-5373.

What happens to the warranty when I sell the boat?

Unexpired factory coverage passes to the next owner once the motor is re-registered, provided they use it for pleasure. An MPP contract has to be transferred within 30 business days of the sale or it is voided, and that window is easy to miss.
